Kraftfahrzeugsteuer, or Kfz-Steuer, is the German vehicle tax on registered vehicles. For passenger cars, the amount usually depends on the date of first registration, engine displacement, fuel type, and CO2 emissions. The tax is administered not by the Finanzamt, but by Zoll, i.e., German customs.
