Your situation

Apply for Kindergeld

Selected criteria

  1. I recently arrived in Germany
  2. Address family and children’s needs
  3. Apply for Kindergeld

Kindergeld is applied for through the Familienkasse, but eligibility depends on your specific family situation, where the child lives and the applicant's status. Start by choosing one recipient and checking which documents apply to your case. Then submit the application through the available online service or in writing, keep the confirmations and respond carefully to requests from the Familienkasse. If your household income is low, you can separately check Kinderzuschlag after the main application: it is not the same benefit and requires a separate assessment. Do not rely only on general amounts or other people's experience if you have a non-standard residence status, parents living separately or a child over 18.

Plan overview

Prepare the details, submit an application to the Familienkasse and separately check possible Kinderzuschlag.

What to do step by step

  1. 1

Check who will receive the benefit

Confirm who actually cares for the child and will be named in the application.

  2. 2

    Gather documents for your case

Prepare identification numbers, account details and any documents the Familienkasse may request.

  3. 3

Submit the application to the Familienkasse

Use online submission or paper forms and keep details of the submission.

  4. 4

    Report changes

After the decision, notify the Familienkasse of circumstances that may affect the benefit.

  5. 5

    Check Kinderzuschlag separately

If your household income is low, assess eligibility for the supplement through the Familienkasse; it is applied for separately.

Important notes

  • The benefit is paid to one recipient.
  • Kinderzuschlag is calculated individually.
