Anmeldung in Germany: How to Register Your Address at the Bürgeramt

Anmeldung is the registration of your residential address in Germany. Without it, it can be difficult to open a bank account, arrange many contracts, receive important letters from authorities, and get the rest of your post-move bureaucracy up and running.

If you have moved into an apartment and plan to live in Germany for longer than a short temporary stay, register your address at the local Bürgeramt, Bürgerbüro, or Einwohnermeldeamt. In 2026, the standard deadline under the Bundesmeldegesetz is two weeks after moving in.

What is Anmeldung

Anmeldung means informing the city or municipality of your actual place of residence. After registration, you receive confirmation: a Meldebescheinigung or Anmeldebestätigung. 1. Find the right office

2. Prepare the documents

whether the move-in date matches the actual move-in date;
whether all family members are listed;

3. Attend the appointment

Can you do Anmeldung online

In 2026, Germany is expanding electronic address registration through the Elektronische Wohnsitzanmeldung service. It is not available everywhere and depends on the city, the type of move, and your documents.

For online registration, you usually need:

a BundID or a compatible user account;

AusweisApp;
the ability to confirm your new address and upload the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung;

Can you register at an Airbnb or temporary accommodation

You can register only at the address where you actually live and where the Wohnungsgeber is willing to issue a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.
