3 quick steps

IT Ausbildung in Germany is vocational training that combines theory at a Berufsschule with hands-on work at a company. For beginners, school graduates, specialists moving to Germany, and people who want to change careers, it is one of the most direct ways to enter the German IT market without going through a traditional university path.

In IT, the profession most people look at is Fachinformatiker/Fachinformatikerin. It is a recognized dual Ausbildung that usually lasts 36 months and is regulated by the federal Ausbildungsordnung. Since 2020, the Fachinformatiker profession has had four tracks: Anwendungsentwicklung, Systemintegration, Daten- und Prozessanalyse, and Digitale Vernetzung.

How IT Ausbildung works

In a dual Ausbildung, you study in two places:

  • at the company, where you work on real tasks and receive Ausbildungsvergütung;
  • at the Berufsschule, where you study theory, the basics of the profession, economics, law, communication, and specialized IT topics.

After you successfully pass the Abschlussprüfung, you receive a professional qualification recognized in Germany. The exact conditions, such as your salary during training, the Berufsschule schedule, whether the duration can be shortened, and the language and document requirements, depend on the company, the federal state, the school, and your personal situation.

The four Fachinformatiker tracks

Fachinformatiker für Anwendungsentwicklung

This track suits people who want to develop, adapt, and maintain software solutions. The work can include web applications, internal company tools, databases, APIs, testing, documentation, and user support.

What matters:

  • an interest in programming and logic;
  • a willingness to understand the needs of clients or internal departments;
  • basic math and English for working with documentation;
  • attention to detail in testing and working with code.

Fachinformatiker für Systemintegration

Systemintegration is closer to infrastructure: servers, networks, workstations, cloud services, IT security, and the installation and maintenance of systems. It is a good choice for people who are interested in how a company’s IT environment works as a whole.

Typical tasks:

  • planning and configuring systems;
  • administering networks and servers;
  • supporting users;
  • backups, security, and monitoring;
  • infrastructure documentation.

Fachinformatiker für Daten- und Prozessanalyse

This track appeared as part of the modernization of IT professions and is tied to data and business processes. The specialist helps ensure that data is available, reliable, and useful, and also develops IT solutions for digital processes.

Who it suits:

  • people who like analyzing data and finding patterns;
  • people interested in databases, reporting, automation, and processes;
  • people ready to develop mathematical and analytical thinking.

Fachinformatiker für Digitale Vernetzung

Digitale Vernetzung sits at the intersection of networks, IT systems, and production or cyber-physical processes. Network components, interfaces between systems, automation, and troubleshooting all matter here.

This track may suit you if you are interested in:

  • connecting IT systems and applications;
  • infrastructure for automated processes;
  • diagnosing errors;
  • the security and reliability of connected systems.

How to choose a track

Look not only at the title, but at the daily tasks. The same term, “IT,” can mean development, user support, administration, data analysis, or industrial automation depending on the company.

If you are interested in Look first at
Code, applications, web, APIs, testing Anwendungsentwicklung
Servers, networks, support, security Systemintegration
Data, reporting, processes, automation Daten- und Prozessanalyse
Networks between systems, IoT/production IT, integration Digitale Vernetzung

Before applying, read the Ausbildung job description carefully. Companies may use the same profession title, but the actual day-to-day tasks can differ a lot.

What employers usually look at

Formally, the requirements depend on the company, but in IT Ausbildung employers most often look at:

  • a school diploma or another education document;
  • German language skills that are sufficient for Berufsschule and teamwork;
  • basic English, because documentation and tools are often in English;
  • motivation for IT and an understanding of the chosen track;
  • first practical steps: small projects, GitHub, courses, school projects, a home lab, or helping other people with technology;
  • a carefully prepared CV and cover letter.

For applicants from outside the EU, additional visa and migration requirements may apply. These have to be checked separately through official sources and with the consulate, because the rules depend on your citizenship, contract type, and personal situation.

When to start looking for a place

Many Ausbildung programs start in August or September, but employers publish vacancies in advance. For strong companies and popular tracks, it is better to start looking 9 to 12 months before the start date. If you are applying from another country, allow extra time for translating documents, the visa, housing, and the move.

A practical plan:

  1. Choose 1 or 2 Fachinformatiker tracks that match the kind of work you want to do.
  2. Prepare a German CV, a short Anschreiben, and one PDF with your documents.
  3. Gather proof of your interest in IT: projects, courses, hands-on practice, and portfolio links.
  4. Look for vacancies on company websites, Ausbildung portals, at the IHK, and through the Bundesagentur für Arbeit.
  5. Keep a spreadsheet of your applications: company, track, deadline, status, contact, and response date.
  6. Prepare for interviews: why IT, why this track, what you have already tried, and how you learn on your own.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing Anwendungsentwicklung only because “programmers earn more” without ever trying to code.
  • Ignoring German: even in IT, Berufsschule and internal communication usually require confident German.
  • Sending the same Anschreiben to every company.
  • Not reading the Aufgaben section in the vacancy and confusing Systemintegration with development.
  • Telling yourself, “I’ll learn everything on the job,” without showing proof of basic interest.
  • Relying on unverified salary stories instead of the terms of the specific contract and pay scale.

Who IT Ausbildung suits better than university

Ausbildung can be a good option if it matters to you to get into practice faster, gain company experience, and learn through real work tasks. University is more often the better fit for people who want a deeper focus on theory, math, research, computer science, or an academic career.

If you are choosing between these paths, it helps to compare the study format, language requirements, financial load, and career goals. You can also look at the related article Ausbildung or university?

FAQ

Do I already need to know how to program?

For Anwendungsentwicklung, basic hands-on practice helps the most: simple projects, an understanding of variables and functions, Git, and debugging. For the other tracks, basics in networks, operating systems, data, or automation are useful. An expert level is usually not required before you start, but it is better to prove your motivation through actual work.

Can you do an IT Ausbildung without German?

In practice, that is difficult. Even if the company is international, the Berufsschule, exams, contracts, and part of the work processes are usually in German. The required level is set by the employer, but the more confident your German is, the better your chances of passing the selection process and coping with the training.

Is there a salary ceiling after Ausbildung?

The statement that “there is no ceiling” sounds impressive, but it does not help with planning. Your income after Ausbildung depends on the region, company, specialization, experience, collective agreement, skills, and further development. It is better to compare real vacancies and official overviews than to rely on promises.

Can you go to university later?

After Ausbildung, there are different paths available: work, Weiterbildung, Fachwirt/Meister-like tracks, and, if you meet the requirements, further study. University admission rules depend on the federal state, your previous education, and the chosen program, so they need to be checked separately.
