Social Security Number in Germany: What It Is and Where to Find It

3 quick steps

Almost every employee in Germany needs a social security number, or Sozialversicherungsnummer. Employers and social security agencies use this number to track your contributions to pension, health, unemployment, and long-term care insurance. If you’re starting your first job in Germany, the number is usually issued automatically through your employer and the Deutsche Rentenversicherung.

What does a Sozialversicherungsnummer look like?

The German social security number consists of 12 characters: 11 digits and one letter. Example format: 13 110587 M 565.

It usually looks like this:

  • 1-2: the code for the pension insurance agency;
  • 3-8: date of birth in DDMMYY format;
  • 9: the first letter of your last name when the number is assigned;
  • 10–11: serial number;
  • 12: check digit.

In everyday use, this number may be referred to by various names: Sozialversicherungsnummer, SV-Nummer, Versicherungsnummer, Rentenversicherungsnummer, RV-Nummer, or VSNR. In most work-related contexts, however, they all refer to the same personal pension insurance number.

Where to find your number

On your pay stub

If you’re already employed, check or your pay stub. The number is often listed as SV-Nummer, Versicherungsnummer, or RV-Nummer.

In a letter from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung

When you start your first job, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung issues a document with your number. It used to be called a Sozialversicherungsausweis, but as of January 1, 2023, it is now called a Versicherungsnummernachweis. Keep this document with your other important papers: the number is assigned once and usually stays with you for life.

If you lose the document, you can request a new Versicherungsnummernachweis through the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. The online service is available at SelfServiceWeb, but for some transactions, you may need your existing insurance number or additional identification information.

Through public health insurance

If you’re insured through a public Krankenkasse, you can often find the number in your membership documents, such as the Mitgliedsbescheinigung. For many health insurance providers, these documents are available in your online account or upon request from customer support. At Techniker Krankenkasse, this is usually done through Meine TK in the “Certificates and Applications” section, though the menu item names may vary.

How to Get a Number for the First Time

Starting in 2023, when hiring a new employee, employers are generally required to request a social security number through the data transmission system for pension insurance. If a number already exists, it is provided to the employer. If no number exists yet, one is assigned as part of the registration process.

In practice, your employer may still ask for your basic information: name, date of birth, address, citizenship, and the documents required for payroll registration. If you’ve just arrived in Germany and haven’t yet received a letter from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung, check with your employer to see if the number has already been requested.

How to Request a Versicherungsnummernachweis on Your Own

Sometimes you need the number before your first paycheck—to complete paperwork or because your employer asks for proof. In that case, you can apply to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung on your own.

Online or via the contact form

On the Deutsche Rentenversicherung website, there is a form for requesting a proof of social security number (контактная форма). In your request, specify that you need a Versicherungsnummernachweis, and attach supporting documents if the agency asks you to verify your identity and address.

Example of a short text in German:

> Guten Tag,

> I’m new to Germany and need proof of my Sozialversicherungsnummer. Please let me know what documents you need for this. If possible, please send me the proof by mail.

> Thank you very much.

> Best regards

> First Name Last Name

In most cases, you’ll need a passport or other form of identification, as well as a Meldebescheinigung after registering your address. The response and the document itself usually don’t arrive immediately, so make sure your last name is listed on your mailbox.

In person at the Deutsche Rentenversicherung

You can visit your nearest Deutsche Rentenversicherung office. In some cities, appointments are required; in others, the procedures vary, so it’s best to check the local office’s website or call ahead before visiting. Bring your passport and your Meldebescheinigung.

Why do you need this number?

The Sozialversicherungsnummer is used to track mandatory social security contributions deducted from your paycheck. It links the following:

  • public health insurance;
  • state pension insurance;
  • unemployment insurance;
  • long-term care insurance.

Your employer needs this number to properly register you and calculate your contributions. You may also need it when contacting the pension insurance agency, verifying your pensionable service, or for certain procedures after leaving Germany—for example, if you’re looking into the possibility of getting a refund of your pension contributions.

Refund of Pension Contributions in Germany

If you’re a freelancer () or self-employed () and don’t pay mandatory contributions as an employee, the situation may differ. Having private health insurance alone doesn’t always mean you already have a social security number. In cases of uncertainty, it’s safer to check directly with Deutsche Rentenversicherung.

Common Mistakes

  • Don’t confuse the Steuer-ID with the Sozialversicherungsnummer. The Steuer-ID is for taxes, while the SV-Nummer is for social insurance.
  • Don’t look for the number only on your health insurance card. The electronic health insurance card (Krankenkasse) usually shows your health insurance number, not necessarily your pension number.
  • Waiting for a paper letter and not checking your pay stub. If you’re already working, the number may have been listed in your payroll documents before you received the letter.
  • Do not send scans of documents without verifying the recipient’s identity. Use the official contact information for Deutsche Rentenversicherung or your Krankenkasse.

In Brief

The social security number in Germany is a permanent 12-digit identifier for the social security system. When you start your first job, your employer usually obtains it through the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. You can find the number on your pay stub, in the Versicherungsnummernachweis, or in documents from your state health insurance provider (Krankenkasse). If you need the number urgently and can’t find it, contact Deutsche Rentenversicherung directly.
